Liam confident of more to come after strong Snetterton weekend
Liam Delves recorded two strong top 10 results at the fifth round of the HEL Performance British Motostar Championship at Snetterton in Norfolk at the weekend.
The 16-year-old Solihull rider qualified well in sixth place and started the first of two races from a second-row grid position. He said: “I am on the second row on the grid and set a personal best lap time and am feeling confident that there is still more to come.”
But things didn’t quite go his way as, in the early stages of the short sprint race, a rider ahead fell causing Liam to take evasive action to avoid hitting him and that lost him momentum. He spent the remainder of the 10 laps playing catch up to the group in front of him and completed the race in seventh position to pick up nine championship points.
He explained: “I got tangled up in a crash but managed to swerve and avoid the rider in the middle of the track. That left a big gap between me and the front six riders and I was unable to catch them but looking forward to the main race tomorrow when I hope to get a clean getaway and stick with the leading group.
Starting the 12 lap feature race from the third row Delves soon became embroiled in a seven-rider battle for third place. The action was frantic with many exchanges of position throughout the 12 laps. His former Banks Racing teammate Ed Rendell passed him on lap 10 and Sam Llewellyn followed him through which demoted Liam to ninth. But shortly after completing the move Llewellyn crashed and Liam retook eighth position and completed the final two laps in eighth position to pick up eight more championship points.
Liam commented: “I have had a great weekend at Snetterton on the Stauff Connect Academy Moto3 bike. I finished race two in eighth place and am happy with my performance as I managed to stay with the group fighting for third place. I would like to thank my team and DR Moto for all their hard work and putting a mega bike under me this weekend and also my loyal sponsors and supporters.”
This strong set of results places Liam 11th in the rider standings on 54 points withthe next round of the HEL Performance Motostar at Brands Hatch over the weekend of July 21/23.
