Liam enjoys Great Silverstone weekend “but not the results we wanted”
Liam Delves was at Silverstone for round nine of the HEL Performance Motostar championship where he recorded a ninth and 12th place in his two races on his Stauff Connect Academy DR Moto Moto3 machine, riding in dreadful weather conditions at the weekend.
One free practice session took place in the wet while the second was on a drying track and then qualifying was done on a completely dry track which caused problems with set up and tyres for the teams in the differing conditions. Liam completed his qualifying in 13th place (11th in his class) to start the 10 lap Sprint race from a fifth row grid position on Saturday.
The track was dry in places but then wet in others so everyone opted for full wets. As the lights went out Liam made a good start and was up to ninth on the first lap. He dropped a place when Sam Llewelyn made a pass on him but within seconds Llewelyn crashed at Club corner which elevated Liam back up to his original position on ninth. Although he got to within half a second to the rider ahead he was unable to make a pass on him and remained in ninth place to the chequered flag.
In the Feature race on Sunday which was shown live on Eurosport 2 and also on Quest, Liam set off from the fourth row once again but although he got away well he was within a large group of riders all wanting the same piece of tarmac. Unfortunately, Liam was pushed off the track in the rush to the corner before rejoining the race down in 18th place.
He began a monumental comeback from way downfield picking off riders on every lap until he reached 12th place on lap six. But the weather was closing in and the rain caused the red flag to put an end to the race on lap seven with Liam being awarded 12th place. This set of results place Liam in 11th place in the rider standings on 91 points.
He said “I had a great weekend but unfortunately my results were not what we either wanted or expected. I was pushed off the track and lost a lot of time before rejoining in P18 and over two seconds behind the group. I got my head down and managed to pull in the group ahead passing six bikes but then the race was stopped due to rain. I had a good rhythm and felt I could have passed more but the red flag and the weather were against me. I would like to thank my team for their support and hard work all weekend and of course all my loyal sponsors who came along to support me Dr Moto, Veriserv, Bassett Cleansing, Borleys Minimix and everyone else that supports me.”
It is a quick turnaround for the team as they head to Cheshire on Wednesday ahead of the next round at Oulton Park which takes place on September 15/17.
