Liam closes 2017 with great battles and good results at Brands Hatch
Liam Delves was at Brands Hatch last weekend for the final two races in the HEL Performance British Motostar GP championship where he recorded a brace of ninth places to complete his season on the Stauff Connect Academy DR Moto3 bike in ninth place.
After a trouble-free practice and qualifying, Delves began the shorter Sprint race on Saturday from a third-row grid position and was holding 10th on the opening lap. He passed Mike Brouwers on lap two and settled into ninth position to become embroiled in a seven-way battle for fifth place.
With less than a second covering the seven riders Delves held his position within the group but was unable to make a move forward and crossed the finish line in ninth place to pick up seven championship points.
He said: “That was a great race today. I was in a seven-rider fight for a fourth place but unfortunately, I came across the line in ninth but I did set my personal best lap in the process. The team will make a couple of changes and hopefully we will improve our position in the feature race on Sunday.
Starting the final race of the season from the head of the third row, Delves got a really bad start, losing seven places back to 12th at the start. But he recovered and got his head down to move forward to ninth position at the halfway stage of the 12 lap affair. He then became involved in a three-way battle for eighth place with Eugene McManus and Edmund Best and the trio exchanged places throughout the remainder of the laps. Delves got to the front of the group in eighth place and held the position until the final lap when he was beaten to the finish line by McManus by the smallest of margins – 0.2 of second.
This set of results brings Delves a further 14 championship points and bring his total to 127 which place him ninth in the final championship standings.
