Oulton Park Pirelli National Superstock 600 report: “Only a second off third place”
Liam Delves rode to a strong 12th place in the penultimate round of the National Superstock 600 championship for Quinnstheprinters.com by Team IMR at Oulton Park to bring his points haul to seven after just two races in the series.
Weather conditions were mixed at the Cheshire circuit with rain on Friday, intermittent showers on Saturday and a deluge for his race on Sunday. But the dire conditions didn’t deter Liam as he qualified well, in 11th place and began his race from a fourth-row grid position.
With spray was causing problems with vision for the midfield riders, Liam held back for the first few laps to let the field spread out before making a move forward. He circulated in 15th position for much of the 12 lap affair but then passed Conor Wheeler and Aaron Clifford on lap nine. With second-placed rider, Rory Skinner crashing out of the race Delves was elevated to 12th place and, too far away from the rider in 11th place, brought the IMR quinnstheprinters.com Yamaha R6 home in a fine 12th place.
A happy Liam said:“ That’s my first wet race over and done with at Oulton Park on the Yamaha R6. I was really enjoying myself out there and that reflected in my lap times which were coming down on every lap. It’s been a different weekend compared to Silverstone as Oulton is a very physical circuit in comparison and having my first ride in the wet was certainly an experience! On the Moto3 bike, you just sat there whereas the 600 wants to wheelie everywhere but, overall, I’ve been very pleased with how the meeting’s gone. I got quicker in each session and in qualifying I was only a second off third place and although it was very tricky in the race, especially the last few laps when it was difficult to get heat into the tyres, I’ve got to be pleased with 12th place. I can’t wait to get back out on the bike at Brands Hatch for the final round of the championship next month. I have to thank the team for giving me the chance to ride again this week and also my sponsors and supporters for their continued support.”
Ian Moffitt, IMR Team Manager said “Liam’s attitude has again been first class and he has a mega approach to his racing so to see him qualify in 11th was just rewards for his efforts. Oulton is a lot more technical compared to Silverstone but he rode brilliantly and we’re all delighted. Conditions in the race were terrible but for just his second time in the wet, he did a great job. The team’s making good progress and with the stability back in our racing, it’s been a very enjoyable weekend.”
