Liam inside the top ten in both races at Oulton Park
Liam Delves was at Oulton Park this weekend in round four of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 championship where he recorded a ninth and 10th place in the two races for Santander Salt TAG Racing onboard his Yamaha YZF-R6.
But the weekend did not pass without incident as the Solihull rider suffered a crash in the final five minutes of the qualifying session while holding second place. He dropped down the order to fifth when the session finished.
Starting the first of two races from the second row Delves was feeling sore after his crash and was unable to give it his best shot. But he bravely battled through the 12 lap affair to finish in 10th place to pick up some valuable championship points.
He said: “it’s been a difficult day with me having a high-speed crash in my qualifying session and just making it out in time for my race feeling battered and bruised but I managed to finish inside the top 10.”
Starting the second race on Sunday from the fourth row Delves had just begun his move forward and was poised to move up into 11th position when a crash further downfield brought out the red flags on lap six.
After a delay the race was rerun over the shorter distance of six laps and once again he set off from the fourth row. This time he had no time to waste and got up as far as eighth on the penultimate lap but he was caught by Joe Talbot on the run to the chequered flag and crossed the finish line in ninth place, just a tenth of a second away from Talbot who was eighth.
Liam said: “This has been our toughest weekend of the season so far, but the important thing is we brought home points towards the Championship, not many, but it’s better than nothing.
The team worked so hard again to get the bike set-up for the nature of the circuit, and by qualifying I felt so much more comfortable. But as I pushed for a faster lap I crashed at turn one…
I was really battered about after it but I knew I had to ride through the pain, so to bring home points was vital, and we did that. We’ll re-group now, look ahead to Donington Park and give it our all to get back into the Championship fight.”
With the points accrued from Oulton Park Delves holds joint fourth place in the overall rider standings on 42 points.
The penultimate round of the series is at Donington Park on October 2/4.
