Liam takes two top ten finishes in the first round
Liam Delves recorded two top 10 finishes to his races in the first round of the 2021 Pirelli Junior Superstock championship at Oulton Park.
Riding the JR Performance Kawasaki ZX6R636, Liam completed his qualifying in a strong eighth position which gave him a start from the middle of the third row for the first race of the new campaign.
As race one got underway on Saturday, Liam didn’t get the best of starts and completed the first lap in 10th position. One lap later he overtook Jack Bednarek, but during the lap a two-bike crash ahead caused him to slow and he lost touch with the leading group. Nonetheless, he crossed the line at the end of lap two in eighth place and continued to chase after the group ahead.
With other riders ahead including the race leader, crashing out Liam found himself up into sixth position and battling with Luke Verway through the reminder of the race and on the final lap he took his chance and passed Verway to claim fifth place at the chequered flag.
Liam said: “That’s the first race of the season out of the way. I managed to get through and take the fifth place so we have some positives to take forward into Sunday’s race where I will be pushing to improve.”
Once again starting from the third row Liam was boxed in at the first corner in Sunday’s race and crossed the line to start the second row in 11th place. But he passed Sam Laffins to move up into the top 10. He remained in 10th until lap 10 when he passed Reid and Valleley and moved into eighth place. But his move forward was short-lived as the pair retook him on the penultimate lap. Liam was unable to respond this time and crossed the finish line in 10th place.
He said: “That was not the result either me or my team was looking for but we have claimed a good points haul which places me seventh in the overall championship. We now head over to Donington Park for the World Superbike championship round where my class has three races and I am confident we can move forward in the rider standings.
“I would like to thank my team, JR Performance for a mega weekend and for all their hard work, also a well done to my teammate Joe Talbot on his third-place this afternoon.”
The timetable for Donington Park WSB is:
Friday – free practice 09:45 and 14:15.
Saturday – Race one 12 laps 12:45.
Sunday – Race two 12 laps 12.30, Race three 17:00.
