Liam takes an excellent fourth at Cadwell Park

Liam Delves rode to a fine fourth place in round eight of the Pirelli National Junior Superstock championship at Cadwell Park on Sunday and moves up to fifth in the rider standings.

Free practice and qualifying went well for the 21-year-old Liam who put the JR Performance Kawasaki ZXR636R onto the middle of the third row.

Liam said: “I ended the day in sixth place in free practice and the team has made a few changes to the bike ahead of qualifying. But qualifying didn’t quite go to plan with weather conditions changing during the session. I wasn’t able to find a clear lap without traffic and ended up in eighth place. But if I can get a good start I can get involved in the race on Sunday.”

Sunday brought more unfavourable conditions with a drying track after overnight rain. This caused a dilemma on tyre choice with Liam going for dry weather tyres. As the lights went out he was steady away but got a good start, seventh on the opening two laps.

Owen Jenner made a pass that dropped Liam a place but one lap later George Stanley made a mistake and ran across the grass and another rider crashed which elevated Liam up to sixth place.

Liam was battling in a group of four riders all challenging for third place and riders were falling like flies in the tricky conditions. By lap six Liam found himself up into third place and in a three-way battle for second. Zak Corderoy demoted him to fourth on lap 10 of 12 but Liam was right on his back wheel and looking for a way through.

Unfortunately on the final lap, the group came across backmarkers and while Corderoy got a better passage through, Liam was held up badly and his chance of trying to put in a pass to get on the podium was spoilt. Liam crossed the finish line in a creditable fourth place, in the very tricky conditions.

Liam said: “We took the gamble on the tyres, hoping it would dry. Lapping the backmarkers made the pass for third place impossible in the end but fourth is a good result and I have picked up enough points to move up to fifth in the championship. Thanks to my team for all the hard work throughout the weekend and my sponsors and supporters who make all this possible.”

The next round is at Snetterton over the weekend of September 3/5.
